Meet Matt Forte

Onedroo appears to be taking another day off. Surely he's got more important things to do like clean out Dayton dorms, or whatever job he has that pays $8.50 an hour, a solid rate in 1954 or so.

I told a family member about his job recently and the person was taken aback. I didn't realize at the time, but the person apparently thought I said Droo was "cleaning dogs." The person called our mom and asked, "What is this business with Droo 'cleaning dogs?'" The person is old and may be getting a bit senile.

So we will discuss the future of the Chicago Bears. The Bears cut Ced Benson (see previous post) today and second-round pick Matt Forte was elevated to the starting lineup. Forte put up some serious numbers at Tulane (though not facing the greatest competition), where he averaged 177.3 yards per game as a senior with a 6.7 yards-per-carry average and 23 rushing touchdowns. He ran 4.46 in the forty at the Combine, which is excellent for a 6'1/216-pounder.

Rookie running backs don't have trouble making an impact in the NFL. The only problem Forte might face is defenses keying on him if he gets off to a hot start. The Bears' passing game probably won't be much of a threat considering their modest talent at quarterback and receiver. Still, Forte will be a strong bet for 300 touches this season as long as the Bears don't sign a Kevin Jones, who they probably can't afford anyway considering the salary cap hit they took to cut Benson and desire to sign DT Tommie Harris and KR Devin Hester to new contracts.

With training camp nearly a month away and fantasy football right around the corner, Forte is someone to keep in mind. The Bears envision him as a three-down back and he should be a stud on the goal line because of his good size and strength.

I'm gonna get on the horn with Droo right now and see if he can't squeeze in a post tonight. He says he gets "tired" all the time because he has to "wake up early." Until he gets his act together, his blog is going to be dominated by serious sports talk. Outtie.

In Defense of Bense (told you I was a rapper)

Cedric Benson was not in the wrong on that boat. I said it (and I'm not any cooler). I really think it was a case of those water cops being racist. And I know the word "racist" is thrown around a lot, but it's warranted here. Yeah, it's kind of a ballsy opinion, but check the facts. 1. His mom was on the boat. Nobody goes too wild in front of their momz. He might have had a few drinks, but he definitely wasn't pounding shots. 2. It was the sixth time he had taken his boat out on the lake, and the sixth time he had been pulled over for a "random safety check." Those Texas water-policemen (they probably have some different, more official title) see a party of black people on a big, expensive boat and decide to invade some privacy. If you were Cedric Benson, wouldn't you be upset too? He might have verbally resisted arrest or questioned the cops' motives. He was understandably pissed off. But, as much as Bears fans might dislike Benson (Coolio haircut and all) the guy was not in the wrong. In my opinion, the cops were. You can't judge him by his mugshot either. He was pepper-sprayed in the eyes less than an hour before it was taken. It's a shame that some reporters are rolling with the idea that because he looks drunk and disheveld in his mugshot, he is no doubt hammered. I'll post it below for reference, but ask yourself if a mugshot has ever made you think "Oh, that person must be innocent."
