A whole lot was made of the Detroit Tigers' offseason. They picked up OFs Miguel Cabrera and Jacque Jones (Jones actually last September), SS Edgar Renteria, and LHP Dontrelle Willis. None of the moves have worked out.
The Tigers are currently 26-37 and 11 games behind the White Sox in the AL Central. M-Cabs is hitting like .270 and was recently dropped in the batting order. Renteria is at .267. Jones started so bad the Tigers had to cut him.
Today, Willis was sent to Single-A. Thing is, the Tigers should've seen this coming. Willis may only be 26 and battling injuries, but that's no surprise considering how badly he was overworked with the Marlins in his early 20s. Righties smashed .320 off him last year with 30 homers and he lost a ton of velocity on his fastball. The end was near, and only the Tigers didn't realize it.
As recently as 2005, Willis was a dominantly deceptive southpaw with a heater in the mid-90s and a nasty, knee-bending slider.
Maybe it's a little early for this, but Willis seems to be following the same path as another Onedroohill favorite, ex-Cardinal Matty Morris.
